A Multidisciplinary Approach for Restoration Ecology of Shallow Coastal Lagoons, a Case Study in South France ArchiMer
De Wit, Rutger; Leruste, Amandine; Le Fur, Ines; Maki Sy, Mariam; Bec, Beatrice; Ouisse, Vincent; Derolez, Valerie; Rey-valette, Hélène.
By the end of the 20th century, many of the coastal lagoons along the French Mediterranean coast showed insufficient water quality and degraded ecosystem states due to anthropogenic impacts. Among these, nutrient over-enrichment, resulting in eutrophication, has been a major concern. The EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) has initiated public action to improve their water quality and ecosystem state using an approach rooted in restoration ecology. Here we analyze how this has been applied for the coastal lagoons in South France, considering eutrophication as an example of ecosystem degradation and oligotrophication as the corresponding trajectory for ecological restoration of the eutrophied coastal lagoons. Oligotrophication trajectories, initiated by the...

We elaborate the necessary conceptual and strategic elements for developing an effective adaptive monitoring network to support Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) in a multiuser nature reserve in the Dutch Wadden Sea Region. We discuss quality criteria and enabling actions essential to accomplish and sustain monitoring excellence to support ICM. The Wadden Sea Long-Term Ecosystem Research project (WaLTER) was initiated to develop an adaptive monitoring network and online data portal to better understand and support ICM in the Dutch Wadden Sea Region. Our comprehensive approach integrates ecological and socioeconomic data and links research-driven and policy-driven monitoring for system analysis using indicators of pressures, state, benefits, and...

Within the European water framework directive (WFD), the status assessment of littoral waters is based both on the chemical quality and on the ecological quality of each water body. Quality elements enabling to assess the ecological status of a water body are, among other things, biological quality elements (phytoplankton, macroalgae, angiosperms, benthic invertebrates, fish), for each of which member states have developed quantitative indicators. This document compiles three deliverables of a multi-annual study intended to characterize the sensitivity of these biological indicators regarding the various anthropogenic pressures exerted on the French Atlantic and Channel coast: ultimately, the goal is to establish a quantitative and predictive relationship,...

Evaluation on the Sustainable Development of Agricultural Industrialization Based on DPSIR Model - A Case of North Bay Economic Zone in Guangxi Province AgEcon
Wang, Qiang; Huang, Hu.
According to the connotation of agricultural industrialization, the DPSIR model based on agricultural industrialization is introduced from the five aspects of driving fore, pressure, state, impact and response. Taking the North Bay Economic Zone of Guangxi Province as an example, a total of 23 indices are selected to construct the evaluation index system of sustainable development for agricultural industrialization by using the Analytic Hierarchy Process. And the sustainable development level is comprehensively evaluated by weighted method. The result shows that driving force factor is still in a worse state. Industry, house sites and unreasonable agricultural productive ways have caused obvious pressure on agricultural industrialization. The scores of...

Indicators for the assessment of the potential for employment creation in rural areas AgEcon
Fieldsend, Andrew F..
The EU Framework 7 project “RuralJobs” has used the DPSIR model to show the link between ‘driving forces’ of employment and economic prosperity, and policy responses. These driving forces can be ‘endogenous’ or (neo-) ‘exogenous’ to the territory. They act on the labour market or employment (‘state’) through the ‘pressures’ of jobs (economic activities) and people (the labour force). In turn, the employment rate (jobs per person) influences the ‘impact’ (sustainable economic prosperity). ‘Responses’ can be policy responses or socio-economic responses. A set of 40 indicators was compiled from strategies and programmes relevant to employment in rural areas in the EU.

Gonson, Charles.
Coastal areas are complex socio-ecosystem where ecological, human and decisional compounds show multiple and reciprocal relationships. Because of the growth of population and tourism sector, coastal areas are permanently threatened through increase of recreational uses and diversification of related activities. To better understand coastal areas functioning, it is necessary to take into account uses and their management. Monitoring data over a ten years period revealed that recreational uses greatly increased especially within Marine Protecting Areas (MPA), during week-end days and warm season resulting to higher and more frequent frequentation peaks. While, practices within MPA are managed to decrease impacts, pressures associated with recreational uses...

Microeconomic and Geo-physical Data Integration for Agri-environmental Analysis, Georeferencing FADN Data: A Case Study in Italy AgEcon
Fais, Andrea; Nino, Pasquale; Giampaolo, Antonio.
The authors, inside a TAPAS action, have developed a methodology - based on the integration between FADN data with statistical, administrative and cartographic information - to improve the production of statistical data related to agricultural policies impact on land and environment. This methodology allows - using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology - to produce and organise data at geographical level. Data spatially referenced respond to the specific needs of agri-environmental analysis and problems, mostly related to specific areas (environmental vulnerability areas), inside defined boundaries (e.g. river basin). The GIS is implemented with several cartographic layers (Topographic and cadastral maps, land use, soils, water sources, climate,...

Seagrass ecosystems of the Pacific Island Countries and Territories: A global bright spot ArchiMer
Mckenzie, Len J.; Yoshida, Rudi L.; Aini, John W.; Andréfouet, Serge; Colin, Patrick L.; Cullen-unsworth, Leanne C.; Hughes, Alec T.; Payri, Claude E.; Rota, Manibua; Shaw, Christina; Skelton, Posa A.; Tsuda, Roy T.; Vuki, Veikila C.; Unsworth, Richard K.f..
Seagrass ecosystems exist throughout Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs). Despite this area covering nearly 8% of the global ocean, information on seagrass distribution, biogeography, and status remains largely absent from the scientific literature. We confirm 16 seagrass species occur across 17 of the 22 PICTs with the highest number in Melanesia, followed by Micronesia and Polynesia respectively. The greatest diversity of seagrass occurs in Papua New Guinea (13 species), and attenuates eastward across the Pacific to two species in French Polynesia. We conservatively estimate seagrass extent to be 1446.2 km2, with the greatest extent (84%) in Melanesia. We find seagrass condition in 65% of PICTs increasing or displaying no discernible trend...
